Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
A shocking murder-suicide has rocked the Talpur West Pada locality of Tarkeswar, where a 48-year-old man allegedly slit his wife’s throat and then hanged himself at their residence early Monday morning. The incident is being attributed to long-standing marital discord and suspicion of infidelity.
The deceased have been identified as Adhir Mandal, a vegetable vendor by profession, and his wife, Nayan Tara Mandal, 38, who used to sell sarees in the local market. The couple had been married for several years and shared their home with their two daughters. According to locals and police sources, tensions had been simmering between the two for months.
Investigators revealed that Adhir had grown increasingly suspicious that his wife was having an extramarital affair. Their relationship reportedly took a darker turn in recent days, with frequent arguments and verbal altercations witnessed by neighbors. Things came to a horrific head around 7 AM Monday.
Eyewitnesses say the couple's younger daughter was leaving for tuition when the incident took place. In a sudden fit of rage, Adhir allegedly attacked Nayan Tara with a kitchen knife, fatally slitting her throat. Moments later, he hanged himself inside the house using a rope.
Local residents, upon hearing the commotion, rushed to the house and alerted the Tarkeswar police station. Police arrived swiftly and recovered the bodies, which were sent for post-mortem examinations. An official investigation is currently underway, although initial findings suggest the motive was rooted in jealousy and domestic unrest.
The grisly double tragedy has left the community in shock, with many expressing grief and disbelief. The couple’s daughters are now being cared for by extended family members and social welfare officers. The authorities are also arranging for psychological counselling for the affected children.
